The online battle arena craze has spewed out another game, but this one is sticking around. In similar games such as H1Z1 and Players Unknown Battle Ground, players can land on a map and gear up to eliminate all other contestants in a king of the hill type match. Most other iterations of this genre have all been clunky, bugged and expensive. However, the recent release of Fortnite across all platforms, allowing for cross platform play on a lightweight engine that can be played seamlessly on any requirement ready device has caused it to flourish in the market. The lack of micro transactions that promote a head start to other players in game does not exist, where only cosmetic designs are up for grabs on the in game storefront.

Why play? 

The easy curve of learning the game takes place when you start up, promoting many more casual players to take up the game. The in game user interface is linear and incredibly easy to follow. Lack of "pay to win" transactions in game has leveled the playing field for both veterans and newbies, where having 3 months of your life logged in will not give you a competitive edge in comparisons to dad that just started playing on his work laptop after the kids had fallen asleep. Being able to play where you want, across platforms have drawn crowds to this possibly "market altering" game, where cross platform play was never considered due ti technical restraints. Groups of friends an connect even on different schedules, from a console to a laptop to a smartphone, the possibilities are fairly endless. The game at its core is fast paced and adrenaline inducing, providing heavy stimulus to players which is building an expanding player-base. 

In the works

Possible future inclusion of addition updates, patches and game content has caused this 'once though of dead' genre to flourish. The developing team at Epic Games has listened to the player base since the start, implementing both quality of life issues and fixing bugs in a timely matter. The quickness in addressing issues that come up. Through the online discussion for Fortnite at their official Reddit forum, developers are able to look at real time feedback and discuss/implement new changes accordingly.

The game? Free. Learning the game? Easy. The adrenaline rush and excited squeaks of friends in firefights? Priceless. Best to get on this game and learn some tricks to bring about those wins so you can gloat around the water cooler at work. Good luck!
